Oh list poems can be such fun. This is a most excellent collection of images and emotions, it resonates so deeply and makes me want to write about my own freshman year of college. I love the inclusion of the imaginary girl and imaginary boy stories-- those urban legends that surely haunt all college campuses.
I love list poems and this is a great one to use as a prompt. I love how it turned out. I haven’t had time to do any of the writing but I so enjoyed your post and poem and the comments. And the poems that have come out of this on other Substacks.
Ooh. The last line/Millay line totally snuck up on me. I'd forgotten about it because I was back in the dorms myself, reading this. I love how it's the ending line--so wistful (I'm not sure that's the right word, but something close to it).
“And better friends I’ll not be knowing!”
That’s what I remember yelling out
the Uber window after they poured
me in. I sounded kind of Irish.
Maybe it was all the Kilbeggan.
😁

"Loneliness, the kind you sort of enjoy,
and the kind you don't
The first year friendships that imploded
and better friends I'd not be knowing"
